USA Gymnastics announced its men’s team for the 2023 Pan American Championships on Saturday, with Olympians Yul Moldauer and Shane Wiskus headlining the five-person team.

The full roster includes Moldauer (5280), Wiskus (EVO), Taylor Christopulos (Nebraska), Curran Phillips and Khoi Young (Stanford). Donnell Whittenburg (Salto) will serve as the traveling alternate.

Josh Karnes (Penn State) was initially selected to both the Pan Ams and World University Games teams before being replaced on the Pan Ams squad by Christopulos shortly after the announcement.

“Karnes and his coaches made the decision for him to attend the World University Games and not Pan Ams,” USA Gymnastics told Gymnastics Now in an email.

The championships will take place May 26-29 in Medellín, Colombia, and the U.S. men will be joined by the women’s squad that was named last weekend.

The team was named during May’s national team camp at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center where a selection competition was held to determine the final squad.

The published selection procedures stated that “the top scoring team utilizing a 5-4-3 team format” would be named to the Pan Am Championships. The next athlete in the top scoring team scenario was named as the traveling alternate.

Moldauer and Wiskus were part of the gold medal-winning team at last year’s edition of the championships, with Moldauer also tacking on three individual gold medals (floor, pommel horse, parallel bars) and a silver in the all-around.

The selection competition also determined the men’s squad for the World University Games. Landen Blixt and Fred Richard (Michigan), Christopulos, Karnes, and Ian Skirkey (Illinois) will represent the U.S. at those games, with Kameron Nelson (Ohio State) and Matt Cormier (Penn State) serving as the non-traveling alternates.

Artistic gymnastics competition at the games is set for August 1-5 in Chengdu, China.
