2022 World Gymnastics Championships: Preview, schedule, how to watch
LIVERPOOL, England – Six team berths to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and fourteen world titles are on the line at the 51st World Gymnastics Championships from October 29-November 6 in Liverpool, England.
M&S Bank Arena will play host to more than 400 gymnasts from 74 countries, including dozens of world and Olympic medalists, in the most star-studded gathering of artistic gymnasts since last summer’s Tokyo Games.
The field includes six reigning Olympic champions, including Rebeca Andrade (BRA), Jade Carey (USA), Nina Derwael (BEL), Artem Dolgopyat (ISR), Daiki Hashimoto (JPN), and Zhou Jingyuan (CHN). Joining them are six 2021 world champions: Zhang Boheng (CHN), Nicola Bartolini (ITA), Stephen Nedoroscik (USA), Carlos Yulo (PHI), Andrade, and Wei Xiaoyuan (CHN).
Both U.S. squads are medal contenders in the team and individual competitions, with the women of Team USA – Carey, Shilese Jones, Jordan Chiles, Skye Blakely, and Leanne Wong – looking to defend their 2019 world title. With Russia banned from attending due to its ongoing attack on Ukraine, the men of Team USA – Nedoroscik, Brody Malone, Donnell Whittenburg, Asher Hong, and Colt Walker – have a strong chance of returning to the world team podium for the first time since 2014.
If the U.S. women win once again, they will break the record of five-consecutive titles set by Romania during the 1990s.
In addition to crowning new world champions, Liverpool will award the first berths for the 2024 Games to the top three teams in the men’s and women’s team finals.
“This is a very exciting time for Gymnastics. Only a year after the Tokyo Olympic Games, gymnasts and coaches are already starting to think about Paris 2024, and Liverpool gives them the chance to gain valuable experience on the world stage,” Morinari Watanabe said of the event. “Since the last World Championships in Kitakyushu 12 months ago, fascinating new talents have emerged all over the world. At this competition, they will meet the greatest of this generation. Like everyone else, I cannot wait to see what happens.”
