With the International Olympic Committee (IOC) officially postponing the Olympic Games, USA Gymnastics (USAG) is currently trying to reschedule many events that were set to take place between now and the Games, including the 2020 U.S. Gymnastics Championships and more high-profile events.

“We are in the process of exploring alternative dates for events that have been impacted by the Coronavirus and the postponement of the Tokyo Games,” USAG said in a press release on Friday.

“Specifically, we are working with the USOPC and the St. Louis Sports Commission to reschedule the Olympic Trials, once the new dates for the Olympic Games are set. Barring any scheduling conflicts, we are planning to hold Olympic Trials in St. Louis in 2021. We are also exploring rescheduling the 2020 GK U.S. Classic, 2020 U.S. Championships, 2020 USA Gym Championships and 2020 National Congress and Trade Show sometime in July or August, assuming it will be safe and prudent to hold events at that time.”

Scheduling any sporting event is a challenge due to the current nature and landscape of the international coronavirus outbreak, but if China’s return to semi-normal life–with social distancing–is any indication, the initial height of the outbreak that America is currently experiencing should have passed by July or August.

Whether this means America will be in a place where sports can resume some semblance of normal operations remains to be seen.

The U.S. Gymnastics Championships is the marquee event of USAG’s annual calendar and was set to be held at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, from June 4-7, 2020.

Championships usually take place in early to mid-August in a non-Olympic year. Now that 2020 is assuming that type of schedule, it is likely the event will fall in a similar time frame barring an outright cancellation.
