U.S. all-around champion Konnor McClain announced Wednesday night that she will not be vying for a spot on the women’s world team due to a back injury.

“Unfortunately, I will not be participating in this years world selection camp in 2 weeks due to a back injury,” McClain said on Instagram. “Although this is very upsetting after such a successful year, I’m ready to come back next year stronger and healthier! I want to thank my family and coaches for all the support!”

McClain bested Shilese Jones in a tight competition at the U.S. Championships in August and was a favorite to make the world team following her performance. With the 17-year-old staying home, there is a large question mark as to who could replace the rising star as the U.S. tries to defend its 2019 world title.

Olympians Jade Carey and Jordan Chiles are heavy favorites for the five-person team, along with Jones. Previously expected to opt out of world team selection camp, 2022 world all-around bronze medalist and Olympic team alternate Kayla DiCello might compete for a spot after finishing fourth at nationals. Her Florida teammate and U.S. Classic champion Leanne Wong is currently not on national team but would be a contender if she were invited to camp. Other potential team members include Skye Blakely, Katelyn Jong, and Lexi Zeiss, as well as other members of the national team.
