Code of Points published for 2022-2024

The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) released the new 2022 to 2024 Code of Points for Men’s and Women’s Artistic, Trampoline, Acrobatic and Aerobic Gymnastics on Wednesday.

The new Codes of Points are applicable from January 1, 2022, to December 31, 2024.

The Code of Points is the governing document and a frequent source of reference for each discipline. It is instrumental in giving general direction to the sport, including documenting the values granted to various elements and combinations, as well as the penalties imposed for errors.

Every four years, or quad, the Code of Points receives an in-depth review that typically results in changes to routine composition requirements, devaluing of skills, the addition of new skills, and sometimes, even the removal of old skills that are no longer frequently used, if at all.

“The aim is not to undertake major changes but to make the modifications or adjustments that may be necessary to properly reflect the evolution of the disciplines and above all, to ensure the safety of the athletes,” the FIG said on Wednesday.

The development of the Code of Points is led by the technical committees of each discipline. Furthermore, the committees give national federations and continental unions opportunities to give their feedback on draft versions of the Code and share their own ideas to enhance the rules. The final versions are then approved by the FIG Executive Committee.

The new Code of Points usually starts the year after the Olympic Games, but due to the one-year postponement of the 2020 Tokyo Games, publication of the 2022-2024 Codes were delayed to avoid any confusion.

The current 2017-2020/2021 Code will remain in use through this year’s Olympics and World Championships, officially “retiring” on December 31, 2021.
