The kickoff of U.S. elite season is upon us with the 2022 Winter Cup taking place Friday, February 25 to Sunday, February 27 at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, just outside of Dallas.

The 2022 Winter Cup kicks off a domestic slate of competitions that will culminate with the 2022 U.S. Gymnastics Championships August 18-21 in Tampa, Florida.

For the second year, Winter Cup competition will feature both men’s and women’s competitions over the three day weekend and will be accompanied by the annual Elite Team Cup and Nastia Liukin Cup – both meets feature some of the top emerging talent in the country.

The U.S. men’s Senior National Team will be named following the conclusion of competition, and performances across elite divisions will help determine international assignments for several upcoming events, including the 2022 DTB Pokol Mixed Cup and Team Challenge in Stuttgart, Germany. The meet is also a qualifying event for the 2022 U.S. Gymnastics Championships.

Weather is playing more of a role in this competition than would typically be expected in Texas. Snow and ice caused flight delays and cancellations, forcing some athletes to drive to the event. Others have missed podium training and could miss some or all of competition. Stay tuned to our social pages (linked at the bottom of this article) for the latest on this developing situation.

Nastia Liukin Cup

The 2022 Winter Cup weekend kicks off with the 13th-annual Nastia Liukin Cup on Friday, February 25 at 2:30 p.m. ET on Olympic Channel.

The meet features 20 junior and 20 senior USA Gymnastics Women’s Development Program athletes who qualified to compete by way of their performances at a series of invitationals across the U.S. over the past two months.

More than a third of qualifiers have previously competed at a Nastia Liukin Cup, including first-year senior Avery Neff (Olympus), who placed second in the junior division in 2021.

Men’s competition

Senior men’s competition begins Friday, February 25 at 7:30 p.m. ET with the men’s senior all-around final and qualifications for apparatus finals, which will take place Sunday, February 27 at 6:30 p.m. ET and will be determined based off combined two-day scores. The top five senior all-around finishers on day 1 of competition will earn automatic berths to the U.S. Men’s National Team. The full team will be announced “in the days following Winter Cup,” per USA Gymnastics.

A new bonus system will be implemented for U.S. senior men’s competition, beginning at this weekend’s Winter Cup. The system is meant to incentivize athletes to increase difficulty to become more competitive internationally, especially with powerhouses Russia, Japan, and China. The bonuses will be at their highest at the 2022 Winter Cup and decreases over the quad.

“Scores from this competition will reflect the bonus,” USA Gymnastics told GymNow. “On the scoring breakdown, the traditional score will be in one column and then you’ll be able to see the size of the bonus and the added total in two subsequent columns. Placements will be based on the score with the bonus.”

World bronze medalist and 2020 Olympian Yul Moldauer (5280 Gymnastics) and fellow world team members Alex Diab (USOPC) and Colin Van Wicklen (Oklahoma) headline a young field of up-and-coming gymnasts. College stars, including Senior National Team members Vitaliy Guimaraes (Oklahoma), Ian Gunther (Stanford), Paul Juda (Michigan), and Riley Loos (Stanford) will also look to retain their national team spots and make their mark early in the season.

World pommel horse champion, Stephen Nedoroscik (Penn State), and bronze medalist Brody Malone (Stanford) are not competing this weekend after being assigned to compete at the 2022 Cottbus World Cup. Both earn automatic national team berths due to their performances at the 2021 World Championships. Nedoroscik scratched from the competition due to injury earlier this week.

Other men’s elite stars, including Olympians Alec Yoder (Ohio State) and Shane Wiskus (USOPC), are expected to petition for national team spots.

2021 Winter Cup junior champion Asher Hong (Cypress Academy) headlines a packed field of first-year seniors looking to shake up the standings.
