Jade Carey (Oregon State) FX: Double-twisting double layout, beautiful. Full-twisting double layout, single step out of bounds. Tucked double-double, stuck. Punch front tuck through to double back, perfect. THAT’S YOU’RE REIGNING OLYMPIC FLOOR CHAMPION. 14.150.

Simone Rose VT = 13.575

Evey Lowe FX = 12.825

Sun. June 30 @ 9:06 p.m.

The U.S. women lost three athletes to injury this week that were heavily in contention for this team. The veterans have stepped up like expected, but these younger athletes – Joscelyn, Hezly, Tiana, Kaliya – have stepped up beyond imagination. WOW.

Sun. June 30 @ 9:03 p.m.

Sun. June 30 @ 9:02 p.m.

Joscelyn Roberson (WCC) FX: Another NEEDS the routine of her life. Basically stuck double-twisting double layout. Full-twisting double layout, small hop. Double layout, hop back. Triple wolf turn. Crowd clapping along. Punch front layout through to double back and the crowd is ecstatic. WHAT A CHAMPION. Josc is crying so WE’RE CRYING. 13.925.

Sun. June 30 @ 8:59 p.m.

Hezly Rivera (WOGA) VT: Double-twisting Yurchenko, small hop back, beautiful. One of the best ones I’ve seen her do. 14.200.

Sun. June 30 @ 8:55 p.m.

Sunisa Lee (Midwest) VT: Double-twisting Yurchenko, much better than night one. Hop back. Another standing ovation. 14.100. See you in Paris, Suni!

Sun. June 30 @ 8:54 p.m.

Even lower all-around for Simone tonight – 58.325. Minor errors tonight. No doubt she’ll be eyeing that 60 in Paris, but it’s plenty for her to lock up the auto spot onto the team.

Dulcy Caylor (WCC) FX = 12.425

Sun. June 30 @ 8:44 p.m.

Rotation 4 coming up. WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO DO? Seriously these athletes are bringing it.

Sun. June 30 @ 8:42 p.m.

Jordan Chiles (WCC) BB: Front pike mount, good. Back handspring layout, bent in half and she’s off. Apparently all of the Olympians are falling on beam today (save Jade). Front aerial to straddle jump to back handspring. Side somi. Switch leap to Sissone to wolf jump. Side aerial. Switch side 1/4. Double pike, single step back.

Sun. June 30 @ 8:38 p.m.

Joscelyn Roberson with another exceptional beam set, improving on her Day 1 score with a 14.050. Her and Hezly Rivera are tied for No. 1 on beam right now.

Hezly Rivera (WOGA) FX: Full-twisting double layout, hop back but keeps it in bounds. Double layout, hop back. Punch front through to double back, hop back. 2.5 twist, big rebound and flies forward but somehow keeps it in bounds. 13.550.

Sun. June 30 @ 8:29 p.m.

Tiana Sumanasekera (WCC) BB: Candle mount. Back handspring to back handspring to two-footed layout, excellent. Front aerial to split jump to back swing down. Switch leap to switch half, looked a bit low. Side aerial. Sissone to wolf jump. Full turn. Double pike, step back. 13.950.

Sun. June 30 @ 8:25 p.m.

A 106-year-old World War II veteran is in the house tonight. He gets a standing ovation and then tells the crowd his favorite athlete is Simone Biles.

Simone immediately walks over, giving him a wave and blowing a kiss.

Sun. June 30 @ 8:23 p.m.

Sunisa Lee (Midwest) FX: Full-twisting double layout, STUCK COLD. 1.5 to front full, basically stuck. Double L-turn to full turn. Triple wolf turn. Double pike, hop back. 13.850.

Dulcy Caylor BB = 12.425

Sun. June 30 @ 8:19 p.m.

Simone Biles (WCC) BB: Had a rough day here on Day 1. Switch leap to switch half to back pike – no trouble today at all, makes the connections. Triple wolf turn. Front aerial to split jump to straddle jump. Back handspring to layout stepout to layout stepout. Side aerial, arm swing and she’s off… Full-twisting double back, small hop back. She’s gonna be pissed… again. But she never seems to do beam well at trials for some reason *shoulder shrug*. 13.900.

Sun. June 30 @ 8:17 p.m.

Kaliya Lincoln (WOGA) FX: She must do this set like she has never done it before. And even then it may not be enough… Full-twisting double layout, beautifully flared and stuck. Double layout, small hop, so powerful. Triple wolf turn, perfect. Punch front full (form) through to double back, two feet OOB (0.3 neutral deduction). 13.650.

Sun. June 30 @ 8:15 p.m.

Jade Carey (Oregon State) BB: Front roll. Front aerial to split jump to back swing down. Back handspring to layout stepout. Switch side 1/4. Switch leap to switch half to straddle jump. Side aerial. Zoey Molomo BB = 13.200

Sun. June 30 @ 8:13 p.m.

Leanne Wong (Florida) FX: Let’s see if she does the double Arabian third pass upgrade… Tucked double-double, hop to the side. Double layout, small hop forward. Half to front full, steps back. (No upgrade). Double pike, stuck cold. 13.625.

Sun. June 30 @ 8:06 p.m.

Rotation three coming up.

Sun. June 30 @ 7:59 p.m.

Hezly Rivera (WOGA) BB: This is a massive routine for Hezly. She needs needs needs to hit. I would add a million more needs if I could. This could be the deciding factor to send her to Paris. Double wolf turn. Side aerial. Back handspring to layout stepout. Switch leap to switch half to back swing down. Front aerial to split jump to straddle jump. Switch ring, bit of an awkward step. Double pike, single step. 14.275. More than five-tenth improvement.

Still a lot of gymnastics to go, but that’s a compelling case for Hezly – she just went 14+ on bars and beam, where the team needs it.

Sun. June 30 @ 7:54 p.m.

Sunisa Lee (Midwest) BB: Layout mount, leg up and she’s off. Front aerial to split jump to back handspring. Triple wolf turn. Switch leap and misses the connection to the switch half but connects the ring jump. Side aerial to layout stepout to layout stepout, leg up again and she touches the beam. Switch ring, leg up. Piked gainer full, small hop. Guess if you’re going to have a rough beam routine, might as well be here when it’s not going to impact your chances of making the team. 12.825.

Dulcy Caylor UB = 13.275

Sun. June 30 @ 7:52 p.m.

Simone Biles (WCC) UB: Clear hip 1/2 to Maloney to giant 1/1 to straddle Tkatchev to Pak. Van Leeuwen. Toe 1/1 to tucked double-double, hop to the side. 14.200.

Simone is so insanely efficient on bars and beam. Blink and you’ll miss it.

Sun. June 30 @ 7:47 p.m.

Jade Carey (Oregon State) UB: Toe-on to Bhardwaj. Maloney to Gienger. Ezhova. Van Leeuwen. Short on the handstand after. Giant 1/1, stops partway through but somehow stays in handstand and stays ON. Fights and gets it around. Full-twisting double back. 13.075.

Sun. June 30 @ 7:45 p.m.

Kaliya Lincoln (WOGA) BB: Switch leap mount. Switch half, leg up. Back handspring to two-footed layout, beautiful. Front aerial to split jump to straddle jump. Wolf turn is good. Side aerial, arms waving a bit. Switch leap. Double pike with a single step. Kaliya has been bringing it. 13.175 – improves by a little over a tenth.

Sun. June 30 @ 7:41 p.m.

Leanne Wong (Florida) BB: Switch leap to switch half. Switch ring, some arm swinging. Back handspring to layout stepout. Double wolf turn. Front aerial to split jump to straddle jump. Side somi, beautiful. 2.5 twist, small hop. 13.650. More than four-tenth improvement over Day 1.

Zoey Molomo (Metroplex) UB = 12.550

Sun. June 30 @ 7:39 p.m.

Jordan Chiles (WCC) UB: Van Leeuwen. Blind change to piked Jaeger. Toe 1/1. Piked Tkatchev to Pak. Maloney to Gienger. Full-twisting double back, small hop. 14.200.

Dulcy Caylor (WCC) VT: Double-twisting Yurchenko, bit piked down. Small hop. 13.900.

Sun. June 30 @ 7:27 p.m.

Simone Biles (WCC) VT: Yurchenko double pike, juices it and takes multiple steps back. Won’t be as big of a score as night one. And she’s not doing a Cheng tonight (not like she needs to). Smart move. 15.500.

Sun. June 30 @ 7:26 p.m.

Sunisa Lee (Midwest) UB: Nabieva to Bhardwaj. Doesn’t connect the Van Leeuwen. Blind change to straddle Jaeger to Pak to Maloney to Gienger as the crowd gets progressively louder with each caught release. Giant 1/1. STUCK full-twisting double back and the crowd is INSANE! Ears. Hurting. 14.875. 6.4 D-score.

Jade Carey (Oregon State) VT 1: Cheng, rotated SO fast. Small hop. She’s whipping those things out like they’re nothing right now. 14.675. VT 2: Amanar, bit under-rotated and she stumbles back but keeps it on her feet. Stepped over the line. 13.899. Average = 14.287.

Kaliya Lincoln (WOGA) UB: Clear hip 1/2, on TOP of the bar. Stalder 1/1. Shaposh to straddle Tkatchev. Toe-on Tkatchev to Pak. Short on a handstand. Van Leeuwen. Stuck full-twisting double back. 13.450.

Sun. June 30 @ 7:20 p.m.

Zoey Molomo (Metroplex) VT: Excellent Yurchenko 1.5, hop forward. Maybe slightly soft knees as she finished the rotation. 13.850.

Sun. June 30 @ 7:14 p.m.

Jordan Chiles (WCC) VT 1: Excellent double-twisting Yurchenko. Floats it. Hop back. Now she’s getting the crowd to clap for her second vault. 14.500. VT 2: Lopez, beautifulll. Great distance, hop back. 14.250. Average = 14.375

Sun. June 30 @ 7:13 p.m.

Leanne Wong (Florida) UB: Clear hip 1/2 to straddle Jaeger. Toe 1/1 to Bhardwaj. Maloney to Pak. Van Leeuwen. Nearly stuck double layout, smallest of hops. Beautiful set from Leanne. Her and Owen are getting the crowd hyped up! 13.900.

We’re back for Day 2 of women’s competition and the conclusion of Olympic Trials! In just a few hours we’ll know the U.S. women’s Olympic team. Warmups happening now!

Quick Day 1 recap

Day 1 of women’s competition at the USA Gymnastics Olympic Trials is over – thankfully.

Tonight started like the worst rollercoaster you’ve ever been on:

  • Shilese Jones landed weird on her vault in warmups, grabbing at her knee and calling her status into question before doing a stellar bars set (14.675) and scratching every other event.
  • Kayla DiCello balked on her vault in the first rotation, grabbed at her right ankle, and was taken off the floor in a wheelchair with tears in her eyes. USA Gymnastics confirmed later Friday evening that it’s a right Achilles injury and she has withdrawn from Olympic Trials, meaning she’s out of contention for Paris 2024.
  • Immediately after one of her best friends, DiCello, went down on vault, Sunisa Lee was up. Her hand slipped on her double-twisting Yurchenko, giving everyone in the arena a heart attack, but somehow she got it around and was fine.

Things settled after a terrible 30 minutes or so inside Target Center, but those 30 minutes changed the makeup of this team again after Skye Blakely was injured two days ago.

Jones is being assessed and her status is unknown at this time. As it stands, she’s a tentative maybe for Sunday. As a result, team scenarios need to be considered with and without Jones.

Luckily for the selection committee, the remaining four members of the team seem to have solidified their spots after Day 1 of competition, barring something else unexpected happening.

Those four are the four Olympians in the field, who finished top four in the all-around: Simone Biles (58.900), Jordan Chiles (56.400), Sunisa Lee (56.025), and Jade Carey (55.825).

Biles, Chiles, and Carey all did two strong vaults that ranged from 14.325-15.975 (yes, for the Yurchenko double pike), showing the team is plenty secure on that event, especially with Carey’s new Amanar upgrade.

Biles, Lee, and Chiles all put up scores of 14.3+ on bars.

Lee was the only athlete in the field to put up a 14+ on beam, going 14.400 after Biles made a major mistake on her mount – not a concern when she’s been so consistent on that event, just a fluke. Chiles and Carey were solid as well, going 13.625 and 13.575, respectively.

Biles didn’t bring her best to floor with an out of bounds and some other small error, “only” putting up a 14.850. Chiles and Carey were lights out with their sets, going 14.100 and 14.075, respectively, and Lee debuted the new floor routine she’s been working on, complete with a full-twisting double layout to open for a 13.700 and room to improve.

Despite the landscape changing drastically, the question is once again: who takes the fifth and final spot?

If Jones is fine and competes all-around Sunday, then it seems logical she’ll go. If she’s limited to just bars, the committee will have a hard decision to make. If she can’t compete, then the spot falls to one of the following: Joscelyn Roberson, Kaliya Lincoln, Hezly Rivera, Leanne Wong, or Tiana Sumanasekera, listed by all-around rank order after the top four.

Roberson had an excellent Day 1, doing a solid Cheng and outstanding sets on beam (13.925) and floor (13.925). After getting injured at Worlds last fall, Roberson has slowly been working her way back and looks the best she has since Antwerp.

Kaliya Lincoln had one of her best all-around performances to date, putting up a 14.150 to finish second behind Biles on floor and hitting her remaining three routines, including a stuck double pike on beam (13.050).

Hezly Rivera had a good, not great, night. She missed out on crucial tenths on bars and beam – her best events – due to minor errors. Still, she went 14.025 on bars and has plenty of room to improve after hitting all four tonight. She needs to bring her A-game Sunday.

Leanne Wong’s night started great on vault, where she debuted her Cheng for a 14.450 and went 13.925 for a smooth bars set. Beam and floor saw minor errors, again losing crucial tenths. She also didn’t put in her double Arabian upgrade for her third floor pass. With 0.725 separating her and Roberson, she’s fully capable of closing that gap and finishing as the fifth best all-arounder Sunday, potentially making the committee’s decision easier.

Tiana Sumanasekera was the second best beam worker today behind Lee (13.950) and put up a 13.875 on floor. Her bars are the crux of the issue, where she scored a 12.725.

With the four previously mentioned, the biggest need is probably beam, but really, you could take those four and be okay. That in mind, the fifth spot ideally goes to a good all-arounder who can fill in on all four and is particularly strong on beam. Is that Roberson? Wong or Rivera when they don’t make mistakes?

Sunday’s performances will be the deciding factor, and even then, it’s an unenviable decision to make.

Half to front full, large step out. (Was training a double Arabian upgrade there but not doing it tonight). Jade Carey (Oregon State) VT 1: Cheng, excellent, small hop. 14.600. VT 2: Amanar, single step back. 14.374. Average: 14.487.

Fri. June 28 @ 8:52 p.m.

Fri. June 28 @ 8:49 p.m.

Simone Biles (WCC) VT 1: Yurchenko double pike, beautiful, large step back. Gets a high five from Cecile and nods her head. Standing ovation from the crowd for that alone and rightly so – truly defying gravity/physics/all the things. 15.975. VT 2: Cheng, Insane distance, large hop back. 14.799. Average: 15.387.

Fri. June 28 @ 8:44 p.m.

Fri. June 28 @ 8:39 p.m.

Suni Lee (Midwest) FX: Lee’s new floor set. Full-twisting double layout, stuck cold. 1.5 to front full. Bit of a stumble on her wolf turn. Double back, rebounding hop but she’s good. 13.700.

Fri. June 28 @ 8:37 p.m.

Fri. June 28 @ 8:36 p.m.

At this point, we’ve got to consider team scenarios with and without Shilese Jones.

With Shilese at this very moment:

  • Simone
  • Shilese
  • Suni
  • Jordan
  • Jade

Without Shilese at this very moment:

  • Simone
  • Suni
  • Jordan
  • Jade
  • Leanne/Hezly/Kaliya/Josc <— Biggest question mark

Fri. June 28 @ 8:28 p.m.

Three rotations in, top 6 all-around is:

  1. Simone Biles – 42.925
  2. Sunisa Lee – 42.325
  3. Jordan Chiles – 42.075
  4. Leanne Wong – 41.600
  5. Hezly Rivera – 41.300
  6. Jade Carey – 41.225

Fri. June 28 @ 8:25 p.m.

Jade Carey (Oregon State) FX: Double-twisting double layout. Full-twisting double layout, hop back but seemed to stay in bounds. Tucked double-double, one foot out of bounds. Punch front through to double back, bit deep in the knees but basically sticks it nonetheless. 14.075.

Fri. June 28 @ 8:21 p.m.

Kaliya Lincoln (WOGA) BB: Bit of a wobble/hip bend on her two-footed layout series. Stuck double pike. Good the rest of the way. 13.050.

Fri. June 28 @ 8:21 p.m.

Simone Biles (WCC) FX: Triple double (Biles II), basically stuck. Front full through to tucked double-double, excellent. Shilese Jones saluted with the rest of the athletes in her group at vault, but she’s left the podium and put on her warmups (she’s in the second half of this rotation).
