USA Gymnastics undecided on November friendly meet against powerhouses

USA Gymnastics is still deciding whether it will send men’s and women’s teams to a friendly competition in Hiroshima, Japan, on November 8.

In an email to Gymnastics Now, USA Gymnastics said a final decision regarding participation in the meet, which is being organized by the Japanese Gymnastics Federation, has not yet been made.

In addition to Japan, Russia and China are currently set to send delegations, but despite having announced teams for the meet, Russia is still monitoring the situation with COVID-19 and may still back out.

“The team’s numbers will be the same as the Olympics – four men and four women,” Vasily Titov, the president of the Russian Artistic Gymnastics Federation told R-Sport. “Before the competition, there might be joint training sessions, but we haven’t gotten the full schedule yet.”

Per Gymnovosti, one of the logistical issues that needed to be solved to hold the meet was travel restrictions since citizens from the U.S., China, and Russia are all currently banned from entering Japan. But the AP has reported that athletes will be allowed to enter the country moving forward and will not be required to undergo a 14-day quarantine.

Gymnastics Now will continue to relay updates on this developing story.
