Top Scores of the Week

Team

The highest team score of the week didn’t go to Oklahoma. Instead, it was the Utah Red Rocks who went 197.950 on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, tying the Sooners for the top mark so far this season. There was discussion around the validity of the mark, which was earned at the Best of Utah meet; the Utes have been building through the first four weeks of the season, improving their team score week-over-week and overcoming potentially devastating injuries, like that of freshman Avery Neff.

Neff was injured earlier on MLK weekend when the Utes took on Iowa State on Friday. What seemed to be a gruesome injury at the time – with many expecting Neff to be out for the season – turned out to be severe sprains in both ankles. The timetable for her return is unclear, and it could very well be a case where she isn’t back until the postseason or redshirts the season altogether.

197 club: Other teams to go 197 this week: Arkansas, Stanford, Kentucky, Florida, Michigan State, UCLA, Oregon State, LSU, and Oklahoma.

Individual

  • All-Around: Jade Carey (Oregon) – 39.800
  • Vault: Jocelyn Moore (Missouri) 9.975
  • Uneven Bars: Jordan Chiles (UCLA) – 10.0
  • Balance Beam: Helen Hu (Missouri) – 10.0
  • Floor Exercise: Jordan Bowers (Oklahoma), Faith Torrez (Oklahoma) – 9.975

First perfect 10(s): The honor of the first perfect 10 of the season went to Missouri’s Helen Hu on beam at Oklahoma. This was a perfect 10 that much of the gymternet seemed to agree on, especially with it being the first of the season. Hu’s return to Missouri after a year away has already proved outstanding, and she’s just getting started.

UCLA’s Jordan Chiles was perfect on bars against Maryland the day after Hu.
