U.S. women’s Olympic gymnastics team wins gold in Paris; Italy, Brazil make history
PARIS – The U.S. women’s Olympic gymnastics team is back on top of the podium after a dominating performance inside Bercy Arena on Tuesday.
The team consisting of Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, Sunisa Lee, Hezly Rivera, and Jade Carey bested silver medalist Italy by nearly 6 points, 171.296-165.494.
The night was highlighted by excellent Cheng vaults from Carey and Biles, a clutch beam set from Lee after Chiles fell on her mount, and a lights out floor rotation from Lee, Chiles, and Biles that made the arena electric.
It’s history for the rest of the podium as well, with Italy winning its first team medal in nearly a century (96 years ago, at the first Games women’s gymnastics was contested) and Brazil snagging its first-ever Olympic team medal.
