Sun. July 28 @ 10:40 p.m.

Rebeca Andrade is 2nd to Simone in qualifying with a 57.700, not including many of her upgrades. A little less than 2 points back. It will be an exciting all-around final!

Suni 3rd, and Kaylia Nemour (not including Jordan) was 4th.

Sun. July 28 @ 10:32 p.m.

Rebeca Andrade (BRA) FX: Punch front full through to full-twisting double back. Full-twisting double layout, bit of a rebound and a large step. Double Y-turn to stag. Double layout, small hop forward. Double pike, stuck cold. See you in floor final, Rebe! 13.900 – didn’t do her upgraded routine either. She did a whip to full-twisting double layout in podium.

Sun. July 28 @ 10:31 p.m.

Flavia Saraiva (BRA) FX: Whip to full-twisting double back, hop to the side. Double back, hop two feet out of bounds. 1.5 to front full, keeps that in bounds. Double pike, small single step. Think that was easily the crowd favorite today! 13.166.

Sun. July 28 @ 10:26 p.m.

Nina Derwael (BEL) UB: Stalder piked Tkatchev to Pak to Maloney to switch grip to Ezhova to stalder shaposh to Bhardwaj. Van Leeuwen. Toe 1/1 to full-twisting double back. Reigning Olympic champ for a reason! That should be in the final… 14.733 and that’s 4th! Knocks Simone out of the final (Simone is probably grateful, besides the fact she won’t be able to try her new move there.)

Csenge Maria Bacskay (HUN) VT 1: Double-twisting Yurchenko, hop back, bit soft in the knees. 13.900. VT 2 = 13.633. Average = 13.766.

Jade Barbosa (BRA) FX = 13.500

Sun. July 28 @ 10:21 p.m.

Julia Soares (BRA) FX: Double Arabian, a lot of distance, but she sticks it COLD. Half-in, half-out, nearly stuck too. Double back, smallest of hops. Triple wolf turn. Double pike, large single step back. 13.500.

Sitting next to the Brazilian media and they’re ECSTATIC.

Rebeca Andrade (BRA) BB: Switch leap mount. Switch leap to switch half to split jump. Back handspring to layout stepout. Front aerial to ring jump to back handspring. Switch ring. Side aerial, step back. Full turn. Double pike, hop back. That was lovely! 14.500 – into 3rd!

Sun. July 28 @ 10:09 p.m.

Kate McDonald (AUS) UB: Clear hip half, bit over. Maloney to clear hip to straddle Tkatchev to Pak. Van Leeuwen. Toe 1/1 to full-twisting double back, hop forward. Excellent routine! 13.633.

Sun. July 28 @ 10:08 p.m.

Flavia Saraiva (BRA) BB: Back handspring to layout stepout to layout stepout, excellent. Switch ring, small step. Front aerial to ring jump to back honoring, beautiful. Side somi. Switch leap, slips, splits the beam, hangs on for dear life, fights but doesn’t come off. So unfortunate. She was doing exceptional. 13.133.

Sun. July 28 @ 10:02 p.m.

Julia Soares (BRA) BB = 13.800 – 7th right now!

Sun. July 28 @ 9:49 p.m.

Rebeca Andrade (BRA) FX: Maloney to stalder 1/1 to pike Tkatchev to Pak. Van Leeuwen. Almost goes over on the handstand following, bends but doesn’t fold. Piked Jaeger. Toe 1/1 to full-twisting double back, small hop. 14.400 – 9th.

Sun. July 28 @ 9:47 p.m.

We’re back! Brazil is starting on vault, Australia on floor, and mixed groups on bars and beam.

Sun. July 28 @ 8:13 p.m.

Brazil and Australia, plus two mixed groups, coming up at 9:10 p.m. CEST!

Sun. July 28 @ 7:43p.m.

France will not qualify to the team final at their home Olympics despite having a team fully capable of that and more. They’re currently 9th with a 158.797. Only event final that mayyy happen is Marine Boyer on beam, and she’s 8th. So maybe.

Sun. July 28 @ 7:36 p.m.

Coline Devillard (FRA) VT 1: Front handspring Rudi, solid. 14.200. VT 2: Tsuk full, noticeable pike down, single step. 13.100. Average = 13.650.

Sun. July 28 @ 7:28 p.m.

Ellie Black (CAN) FX: Punch front full through to triple twist, small steps but in bounds. 1.5 to double back, single large step out of bounds. Double pike, stuck… super long wait for this score. 13.400.

Meanwhile, Melanie de Jesus dos Santos hit her double-twisting Yurchenko to close a rough night on a high note. 14.200.

Sun. July 28 @ 7:12 p.m.

Melanie de Jesus dos Santos (FRA) FX: This is the last individual final she could make… two finals so far… Full-twisting double layout, stuck. Double layout, super short, falls to her hands and knees. Double wolf turn. Punch front layout through to double back, single step forward. 12.700.

Sun. July 28 @ 7:01 p.m.

Yeo Seojeong (KOR) VT 1 = 14.400. VT 2 = Double-twisting Yurchenko. Tidy for a 13.966. Average = 14.183 – 4th right now, so the reigning Olympic bronze medalist should get into vault final!

Sun. July 28 @ 6:58 p.m.

Ellie Black (CAN) BB: Switch leap to switch half, pause before the back swing down. Double turn to full to straddle jump. Punch front. Back handspring tuck full, steps back and she’s off. Back handspring to two-footed layout, perfect. Side somi. 2.5 twist, small hop. The tuck full – whyyy. That was a stunning routine otherwise.

Sun. July 28 @ 6:53 p.m.

Marine Boyer (FRA) FX: Double L-turn. Punch front full through to double back, uncontrolled rebound forward, doesn’t put her hand down. Hop L. Double pike, small hop forward. Double Y-turn. Double wolf turn. 12.833.

Sun. July 28 @ 6:40 p.m.

Melane de Jesus dos Santos (FRA) BB: Front pike mount, leg up, but she stays on. Back handspring to two-footed layout, perfect. Switch leap to switch half, another leg up. Front aerial to split jump to back handspring. Full turn. Side aerial, puts her hand down but stays on the beam. Rest is fine. Double pike, step forward. Two routines, two essentially falls with the hand touch and the balance checks in that set. 12.366.

Sun. July 28 @ 6:36 p.m.

Marine Boyer (FRA) BB: Roundoff to two-footed layout. Front aerial to split jump to back handspring, split was tight. Side aerial. Switch leap. Switch half. Side somi. Split jump 1/2, bit of a check. Split leap to full turn. Double pike, nearly stuck, smallest of hops. 13.766.

Sun. July 28 @ 6:32 p.m.

Ellie Black (CAN) UB: Struggled a bit on this event in podium, so let’s see what she has for us… Maloney to clear hip straddle Tkatchev. Clear hip pike Tkatchev 1/2 to Ezhova. Maybe brushed the mat? Hard to tell. Van Leeuwen. Short on the next handstand. Giant 1/1. Toe-on front pike half dismount – fabulous. 14.166.

Sun. July 28 @ 6:29 p.m.

Lynnzee Brown (HAI) VT: Excellent Yurchenko 1.5, smallest of adjustments bringing her feet together. 13.566.

Sun. July 28 @ 6:20 p.m.

Live scores aren’t working for us, so bear with me until they’re back.

Sun. July 28 @ 6:20 p.m.

Ellie Black (CAN) VT 1: Front handspring full, tidy with a hop forward. 14.100. VT 2: Tsuk 1.5, small hop forward. 13.900. Average = 14.000.

Shallon Olsen (CAN) VT 1: Cheng, funky form on the table with a majorly bent arm, noticeable tuck in her legs. Smallest of hops forward. How she does that with that block should be researched… but she does. 14.433. VT 2: Double-twisting Yurchenko, much better on that block. Hop back. 13.900. Average = 14.166.

Melanie de Jesus dos Santos (FRA) UB: Inbar shaposh. Catches the Ezhova at her hips and does a hip circle but stays on. Over on the 1/1. She lost it from the Ezhova. Maloney to giant 1/1. Stalder pike Tkatchev. Pak. Short on the next handstand. Van Leeuwen. Full-twisting double layout, hop forward. 12.233.

Sun. July 28 @ 6:10 p.m.

Morgane Osyssek-Reimer (FRA) UB: The crowd is ecstatic for the home team! Toe 1/1, and she loses her swing, comes off the bar. Maloney to Pak, some leg separation. Van Leeuwen, a lot of leg separation. Clear hip. Blind change to straddle Jaeger. Double front, step forward. 11.600.

Lynnzee Brown (HAI) FX: The first gymnast from Haiti to take part in an Olympic Games! Double layout, hop step back. 1.5 to front full. Double turn. Double back. 12.233.

Marine Boyer (FRA) UB: Maloney grip switch to Ezhova. Van Leeuwen. Clear hip. Blind change to piked Jaeger. Toe 1/1 to full-twisting double back, looked very under-rotated, but she lands it nonetheless. 13.200.

Sun. July 28 @ 5:59 p.m.

Subdivision 4 marching in! Canada will start on vault, France on bars, South Korea on beam, and individuals, including Lynnzee Brown, on floor.

Sun. July 28 @ 4:14 p.m.

That’s the end of Subdivision 3! We’ll be back with some initial takeaways from the gymnasts shortly and then Subdivision 4 at 6 p.m.!

Sun. July 28 @ 4:12 p.m.

Sanne Wevers (NED) BB: 2016 Olympic champion! Back handspring mount to wolf jump 1/1. Double L-turn, bobble. Side aerial to back handspring. Front aerial. L-turn to full turn, little lean. Double turn to split leap, beautiful. Piked gainer full, excellent! 13.766 – that’s 7th right now!

Hillary Heron (PAN) FX: Double layout half (Biles 1). Double layout. 1.5 to front full. Double pike, small hop back. She’s so emotional in a good way. What an incredible gymnast! 13.033.

Sun. July 28 @ 3:29 p.m.

Filipa Martins (POR) UB = 13.800

Sun. July 28 @ 3:27 p.m.

Chellsie Memmel said Simone Biles’ new Weiler 1.5 on bars wasn’t in the cards today, but that the plan is for her to try it later in the competition… but, realistically, it’s not likely. She may have been thinking Biles would make bars final (currently 8th – unlikely), so she’d have to do it in the team or all-around – neither of which she can afford a risk like that.

Sun. July 28 @ 3:21 p.m.

Emma Malabuyo (PHI) FX: Double layout, under-rotated, large step forward. 1.5 to front full to stag, beautiful. Triple wolf turn. Double pike, couple steps back. 13.100.

Sun. July 28 @ 3:17 p.m.

Aleah Finnegan (PHI) FX: Crowd immediately loves it. Double Arabian to stag, and they cheer! 2.5 to punch front, STUNNING. L-turn to full turn. Front double full and has a little messy step out of it but covers it up with a pose. 12.733.

Sun. July 28 @ 3:12 p.m.

Other notable scores from Rotation 1:

  • Filipa Martins (POR) VT = 14.133
  • An Chang Ok (PRK) VT Average = 14.183

  • Georgia-Rose Brown (NZL) BB = 12.333

Sun. July 28 @ 3:10 p.m.

Jade Carey update: Carey is sick, according to Olympics.com, and hasn’t been able to eat anything.

Sun. July 28 @ 3:05 p.m.

Emma Malaubyo (PHI) BB: Straddle mount. Double wolf turn. Standing Arabian, bends in half and touches the beam but stays on. Back handspring to layout stepout. Front aerial, misses the connection to the split jump to straddle jump. Ring jump. Side aerial. Switch leap. 1.5 twist, hop forward. 12.233.

Hillary Heron (PAN) VT 1: Front handspring Rudi, large step forward over the line. 13.800. VT 2: Yurchenko 1.5, hop forward. She’s SO happy! 13.500. Average = 13.650.

Sun. July 28 @ 2:58 p.m.

Aleah Finnegan (PHI) BB: Standing Arabian, and her foot slips – she’s off. Back handspring to layout stepout to layout stepout, small bobble. Switch leap to split leap. Switch ring. Front aerial, bobble before the split jump to straddle jump, won’t get that connection credit. Side aerial through to 1.5 twist dismount. 11.466

Sun. July 28 @ 2:57 p.m.

Levi Ruivivar (PHI) BB = 11.866

Sun. July 28 @ 2:55 p.m.

Back for Subdivision 3! Japan on bars, Philippines, Georgia-Rose Brown on beam, Netherlands on floor. Individuals on vault.

Sun. July 28 @ 1:46 p.m.

Team standings after two subdivisions. Three to go.

Sun. July 28 @ 1:46 p.m.

U.S. women positioned for finals:

  • AA: Simone, Suni
  • VT: Simone, Jade
  • UB: Suni – Biles is 8th right now, with 3 subdivisions to go
  • BB: Simone, Suni
  • FX: Simone, Jordan

Sun. July 28 @ 1:44 p.m.

Notes from Cecile Landi on Simone Biles’ apparent injury:

  • “Just a little pain in her calf” – felt it on floor, taped it
  • Said she was dealing with something a couple weeks ago but not up until today
  • Said by bars she started to feel better
  • Not concerned at the moment about her being able to compete Tuesday (women’s team final or beyond)
  • No discussion about doing one vault instead of two or watering down

Sun. July 28 @ 1:43 p.m.

Chellsie Memmel on how she’s feeling after… all that: “I’m feeling pretty good. If you were to ask me like, you know, 20 minutes ago, I might have felt like I was gonna puke. I would have said that.”

Sun. July 28 @ 1:10 p.m.

It will be Suni Lee and Simone Biles for the U.S. in the all-around final! Jordan Chiles put in a valiant effort. Was third to Suni by 0.067.

Sun. July 28 @ 1:08 p.m.

Sunisa Lee (USA) UB: Toe-on Nabieva to Bhardwaj. No connection to the Van Leeuwen. Blind change to straddled Tkatchev to Pak to Maloney to Gienger. Giant 1/1. Full-twisting double back, small hop. 14.866 – into 3rd!

Sun. July 28 @ 1:05 p.m.

Simone Biles (USA) UB: Clear hip half, makes sense not to risk the 1.5 with whatever is going on, connects Maloney to giant 1/1 to piked Tkatchev to Pak. Almost over on the next handstand, but she squeezes. Van Leeuwen. Toe 1/1 to tucked double-double, nearly stuck. Dancing on the sidelines now. 14.433 – that’s 7th right now, so probably to her absolute joy, she won’t make the final, but also probably won’t get to try the new skill.

Sun. July 28 @ 1:03 p.m.

Jordan Chiles (USA) UB: Van Leeuwen. Blind change to piked Jaeger. Toe 1/1 to piked Tkatchev to Pak, that was hugeeee. Maloney to Gienger. Full-twisting double back, a lot of distance, but just a step. 14.266.

Kaylia Nemour (ALG) VT: Double-twisting Yurchnenko – fabulous! Absolutely in contention for an all-around medal. 14.000. She finishes with a 55.966!

Sun. July 28 @ 12:59 p.m.

Hezly Rivera (USA) UB: Hezly struggled on beam to start, so looking for a good set here. Swinging beautiful. Excellent handstands. Bit low in the pike Tkatchev. Full-twisting double back seems close, but just a single step. 13.900.

Sun. July 28 @ 12:57 p.m.

Some score updates from elsewhere around the arena since we’ve been fully focused on the U.S. and this Simone issue…

  • Qiu Qiyuan (CHN) UB = 15.066, unfortunately, she fell on beam
  • Zhang Yihan (CHN) UB = 14.700
  • Kaylia Nemour (ALG) BB = 13.200
  • Alice D’Amato (ITA) UB = 14.666
  • Ou Yushan (CHN) also unfortunately fell on beam
  • Zhou Yaqin (CHN) BB = 14.866

Sun. July 28 @ 12:54 p.m.

Simone is clearly dealing with some kind of calf/lower leg thing, but either it’s not major (cramp/sprain/etc.) or she is going on pure adrenaline. Either way, doesn’t seem to care and doesn’t look like she’s letting whatever it is impede her redemption Games.

Sun. July 28 @ 12:43 p.m.

Simone Biles (USA) VT 1: Yurchenko double pike, juiced it and takes a large step back. 15.800. VT 2: Cheng, also over-powered, another hop step back. 14.800. Average = 15.300.

Sun. July 28 @ 12:43 p.m.

Jade Carey (USA) VT 1: Carey balked on her last pass on floor, so looking for a redeeming two vaults here. Cheng, small hop back, excellent. 14.666 VT 2: Double-twisting Yurchenko, hop back. No Amanar today – probably the best choice. 14.200. Average = 14.433.

Sun. July 28 @ 12:38 p.m.

Jordan Chiles (USA) VT 1: Double-twisting Yurchenko, excellent, great landing, small hop back. 14.333. VT 2: Lopez, stunning through the air and a small hop. She is really peaking at the perfect time. 14.100. Average = 14.216.

Sun. July 28 @ 12:35 p.m.

Sunisa Lee (USA) VT: Double-twisting Yurchenko, one of her best! Smallest of adjustments on the landing. 14.133.

Sun. July 28 @ 12:33 p.m.

Biles does the Yurcheno double pike, lands short and falls forward, but walks off.

Sun. July 28 @ 12:31 p.m.

UM Simone just did a warmup vault, walking fine, and then gets on her knees and CRAWLS part of the way down the podium before getting up and hopping on one foot the rest of the way. She’s definitely stilted in her walking.

Sun. July 28 @ 12:22 p.m.

Simone Biles (USA) FX: It seems Simone has been talking to her coaches and training staff, referencing her calf area. Something to watch. Running on the sideline to maybe feel it out. Tucked triple-double, single step out of bounds. Punch front full through to tucked double-double. Double wolf turn. Double layout half, no stag, step forward. Double layout, hop forward. Cecile comes over to her when she finishes her set and taps her left calf, asking if she’s okay, she nods yes. Laurent also comes have a chat with her. 14.600.

Sun. July 28 @ 12:16 p.m.

Jade Carey (USA) FX: Full-twisting double layout, small hop. Double layout, hops two feet out of bounds it seemed. Out of bounds again on the full-twisting double back pass, uncontrolled rebound. Seems she got tripped up on the last pass, balks and only does a tuck, too much height though and she falls back, almost off the mat. 10.633.

Sun. July 28 @ 12:11 p.m.

Jordan Chiles (USA) FX: This is Jordan’s MOMENT! Full-twisting double layout, stuck. Punch front full through to half-in, half-out, hop forward. Double wolf turn. Double layout, bit low in the chest, step forward. 13.866.

Sun. July 28 @ 12:07 p.m.

Sunisa Lee (USA) FX: Full-twisting double layout, smallest of hops. Oh this is about to be exceptional. 1.5 to front full, hop forward and stays in bounds. Double L-turn to full turn. Triple wolf turn. Double back, fights to keep it in bounds but goes out. Think it was only one foot. 13.100… it was two feet. 0.3 deduction.

Sun. July 28 @ 12:02 p.m.

Rotation 2! U.S. on floor. Italy on vault. China on bars. Individuals on beam (Pauline Schaefer-Betz, Kaylia Nemour). We’ll focus on floor but try to get some others in.

Other notable scores from Rotation 1:

  • China’s high score on vault was Zhang Yihan’s 13.833
  • Helen Kevric (GER) UB = 14.600

Sun. July 28 @ 11:56 a.m.

Simone Biles (USA) BB: Looked like she took a deep breath and said, “I got this.” Switch leap mount, no connection today. Switch leap to switch half to back pike, excellent. Triple wolf turn. Front aerial to split jump to straddle jump. Back handspring to layout stepout to layout stepout. Side aerial. Full-twisting double back, small hop, and the crowd is WILD. 14.733.

Sun. July 28 @ 11:53 a.m.

Sunisa Lee (USA) BB: Looks like she’ll do the straddle mount here, as expected. Layout was giving her trouble. Barely gets the triple wolf turn around, V slow. Front aerial, check. Split jump to back handspring, missed that connection. Switch leap to switch half to ring jump, bit of arm swinging. Side aerial to layout stepout, no second layout, smart move. Switch ring, bit of a small bobble. Piked gainer full, stuck, looked like it was barely in front of the beam (not to the side), but we’ll see if the judges thought otherwise. 14.033 – best of the day so far.

Alice D’Amato (ITA) FX = 13.700

Sun. July 28 @ 11:50 a.m.

Hezly Rivera (USA) BB: Time for Hezly to officially become an Olympian! Straddle mount. Double wolf turn, perfect. Side aerial, step forward. Back handspring to layout stepout, leg up, big check. Switch leap, misses the switch half connection, another bobble. Front aerial to split jump to straddle jump, slips and saves it somehow. Switch ring, good. Double pike, step forward. 12.633.

Over on bars, Kaylia Nemour (ALG) HITS! 15.600! Not even her best set. 7.1 D-score!

Manila Esposito (ITA) FX = 13.633

Sun. July 28 @ 11:45 a.m.

Ou Yushan (CHN) VT: Full-twisting Yurchenko, clean and a hop back. 13.000.

Sun. July 28 @ 11:45 a.m.

Jordan Chiles (USA) BB: Front pike mount, bends over but saves it. Back handspring layout stepout to layout stepout. Front aerial to straddle jump to back handspring, little balance check. Full turn. Side somi. Switch leap to Sissone. Side aerial. Switch side 1/4. Double pike, small hop. 13.600.

Sun. July 28 @ 11:42 a.m.

Simone Biles will of course be a major focus, but Sunisa Lee and Jordan Chiles are battling for the second American all-around spot. Also, watch out for Simone’s new Weiler 1.5 on bars, which she’ll likely attempt today to try to get another skill named after her – then she’d have at least one skill on every event and SIX total.

Sun. July 28 @ 11:41 a.m.

U.S. women start on beam, China on vault, Italy on floor, individuals on bars.

Sun. July 28 @ 11:38 a.m.

Sun. July 28 @ 11:36 a.m.

We’re back form a short break for subdivision 2! Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and Tom Cruise have also entered the villa the arena.

Sun. July 28 @ 11:09 a.m.

Subdivision 2 starts at 11:40 a.m. Will feature USA, China, individuals from Germany, Kaylia Nemour, and Italy.

Sun. July 28 @ 11:07 a.m.

Caitlin Rooskrantz (RSA) was hurt on floor it seems. Didn’t go on vault. Has her foot heavily wrapped/iced and crutches.

The gymnasts are entering the arena, and we can tell you that these leos are already STUNNING. Especially loving Lena Bickel’s and the Mexican styles.

Sun. July 28 @ 9:21 a.m.

For an idea of the atmosphere here, they have an MC and French and English in-arena commentators that start up about an hour before the competition begins. There was a fun musical number yesterday, and they’ve been doing projection shows on the floor that utilize the full square space and look hyper-realistic.

Sun. July 28 @ 9:18 a.m.

While we wait for competition, a funny anecdote: We were told this arena had no air conditioning before arriving in Paris. Sitting here now, getting blasted with frigid air, I can assure you there is AC. It may have been installed specifically for the Games, but it certainly exists. I didn’t pack much by way of warm clothing, so when you’re seeing updates throughout the day, know I’m buried in my Gap hoody and shivering, constantly considering buying a large parka.

Sun. July 28 @ 9:10 a.m.

One of the more odd things inside the venue is they’ve been doing these AI “music videos” using pictures of French athletes from the 1924 Games and making them look like they’re singing. Bit of nightmare fuel.

Sun. July 28 @ 9:02 a.m.

Here’s how qualifying will work: There are five subdivisions with qualifying happening for all finals (team, all-around, events). Here’s how many will advance: top 8 teams, top 24 all-arounders, top 8 individuals on each event. Reminder that there is a two-per-country rule, which means a max of two athletes per country can advance to individual finals (all-around and events).
