On Su Weide’s score of 6.666 on pommel horse: “He normally doesn’t compete in this event, but due to the tight schedule, my stamina was depleting by the final event. Sat. July 27 @ 3:25 p.m.

Paul Juda embracing his role as the leadoff for the U.S. on 5 of 6 events. He’s known he’d probably leadoff a few events since making the team, so he’s been simulating that in training by finishing his routines and then saying, ‘OK, Frody (mix of Brody and Fred’s names), go finish it!’ … or Bred – that’s the new one.😅

He said his heart was beating, his hands were numb, couldn’t feel his knees before horse, but he knew he’d practiced it already and was ready for the moment.

Sat. July 27 @ 2:56 p.m.

We’re back after interviews, and here are some key takeaways from the first subdivision:

USA

  • The Brits beat the Americans in Subdivision 1 by 3.332 points. Despite having supposedly prioritized overall medals (read: individual), they look incredible. The U.S. has an uphill battle, and Brett McClure said the strategy is to go out there and do everything they can.
  • Brody Malone had four falls today and will be two-per-countried out of the all-around final by Paul Juda and Fred Richard. The 2022 world high bar champion will also miss that final. He apologized to the team after, to which Fred Richard said, “He’s very humble because I don’t think he should apologize. I think he did nothing wrong. I think, again, it’s part of his journey, and it’s part of the process. He’s still fulfilling his role, he’s still leading us, he still makes us do better on our routines.”
  • Stephen Nedoroscik leads pommel horse after one subdivision, edging two-time defending champion Max Whitlock, 15.200 to 15.166.
  • Stephen Nedoroscik hit a 6.4 routine today. He said the team would regroup and he’d see what they needed from him, whether it’s a 6.5 or a cleaner 6.2, but Brett McClure followed saying he wants the 6.5. “We can’t hold anything back in team final. Great Britain looks amazing.”
  • Asher Hong is third on rings right now with a 14.633 – he could make that final. He’s fifth on vault after a stellar Ri Se Gwang and Kas double, unlikely to make that final. He’s also 6th on floor – unlikely to make that final right now.
  • Brody Malone (14.533) and Fred Richard (14.433) are fourth and fifth on parallel bars right now. Unlikely, but one or both could sneak into that final.
  • Fred Richard is third on high bar currently despite losing four-tenths on his layout Tkatchev, which was downgraded to a pike and then that was counted as a repeat skill.

Rest of the world

  • Jake Jarman (GBR) leads the all-around after the first subdivision, also put up a massive 14.966 on floor after an inquiry
  • Defending Olympic floor champion Artem Dolgopyat (ISR) is third with a 14.466 right now
  • Max Whitlock is firmly in the conversation for a third straight Olympic title on pommel horse after a 15.166 on horse
  • Eleftherios Petrounias (GRE) scored a 14.800 on rings and should get the chance at a third straight Olympic medal. He won gold in 2016 and bronze in 2020. “It should be enough, but I’m not happy with the score. It’s not the score that I’m executing in training. I am capable of doing routines for 15.000 to 15.300.”
  • Harry Hepworth (GBR) leads vault with a 14.766 average. Reigning world champion Jarman is third with a 14.699.
  • Reigning world parallel bars champion Lukas Dauser (GER) delivered on his specialty despite a bicep injury in the past couple weeks. He’s first with a 15.166 at the moment. 2019 world champion Joe Fraser (GBR) put up a 14.933 and is currently second.
  • Croatian high bar specialist Tin Srbic leads that event after a 14.600. He’s the 2020 silver medalist and a three-time world medalist, including the gold in 2017.
  • Ahmad Abu Al Soud is the first gymnast from Jordan to compete at the Olympic Games, but he fell twice on the apparatus and will not advance to the final. He won a medal at the past two worlds (silver 2022, bronze 2023).
  • Brazil’s Arthur Mariano will miss the high bar final after scoring a 12.900.

Sat. July 27 @ 1:05 p.m.

Frederick Richard (USA) FX: 2.5 twisting double back, large step out of bounds. Front double full to front layout, small hop forward. Tucked double-double, basically stuck. Flairs sequence. Double twist to the side, small hop forward. 2.5 to front full, slips a little, step back. Half-in, half-out, small hop. 13.833.

Sat. July 27 @ 1:01 p.m.

Brody Malone (USA) FX: Time for a good routine to end a rough day… Front double pike, single step forward. Tucked double-double, stumbles to the side, hand down? Front double full to front layout, hop forward. Double twist to the side, stutter step. 2.5 to front full, small hop. Triple twist, single step back. That was fine, but you can’t help but wonder if something is up – physical, mental, etc. Brody is usually the most dialed in without even trying – dialed in is his DEFAULT. 12.666.

Sat. July 27 @ 12:57 p.m.

Asher Hong (USA) FX: Front double full to front double tuck, hop. Front full to front double pike. Laid-out double-double, one step out of bounds. 2.5 to front layout, small hop. Triple twist, step back. 14.100.

Sat. July 27 @ 12:54 p.m.

Paul Juda (USA) FX: Tucked double-double, small hop. Front double full to front layout, fights for the stick. Randi, stuck, low chest. Double full to the side, stuck. Flairs sequence, crowd loves it. 2.5 to front full, hop to the side. Half-in, half-out, small hop. What. A. Day. for Paul Juda! 13.966.

Sat. July 27 @ 12:45 p.m.

Fred Richard (USA) HB: Cassina, clean. Kolman, floaty. Laid-out Tkatchev. Straddle Tkatchev to Pike Tkatchev. Hop 1/1 to one-arm giant. Tak full, bit over. Tak half. Laid-out double-double, stuck to the roar of the crowd, and they keep cheering. 14.166… inquiry submitted, score remains unchanged.

Lukas Dauser (GER) PB = 15.166… insane after a VERY recent bicep injury.

Sat. July 27 @ 12:39 p.m.

Brody Malone (USA) HB: 2022 world champ, 4th in Tokyo… let’s see what he’s got. It’s been an off day for him for sure… One-arm giant 1/1. Tak half to Liukin, and he’s off… fingertips, devastating. Cassina. Kolman is way too close, and he swings his body around the bar before coming off again. You can hear the guys behind him. Laid-out Tkatchev. Straddle Tkatchev to piked Tkatchev. Tak full, bit over. Laid-out double-double, stuck! 12.233.

Meanwhile, Max Whitlock goes 15.166 on pommel horse as he searches for his third straight Olympic gold medal on the event and fourth straight pommel medal. The pommel horse battle is on!

Sat. July 27 @ 12:37 p.m.

Asher Hong (USA) HB = 12.600, lost his swing at one point.

Sat. July 27 @ 12:36 p.m.

Eleftherios Petrounias (GRE) SR = 14.800

Sat. July 27 @ 12:35 p.m.

Artem Dolgopyat (ISR) FX: Laid-out double-double, fights to stay in bonds, think he did. Front full to front double pike, stumbles back, almost sits it. 2.5 to front double tuck. Front double full to front layout. Tucked double-double, small hop. Half-in, half-out, smallest of hops. 14.466 – good for 3rd right now.

Meanwhile, Paul Juda crushes his high bar set! 13.333.

Sat. July 27 @ 12:31 p.m.

Moving to Rotation 5. U.S. on high bar – where Brody Malone and Fred Richard need to hit if they don’t want to be kicked out of the all-around final by Paul Juda – then defending Olympic champion Artem Dolgopyat (ISR) on floor, Great Britain on pommel horse (Max Whitlock!) Eleftherios Petrounias (GRE) on rings, Canada on vault, Germany on parallel bars (Lukas Dauser!).

Sat. July 27 @ 12:24 p.m.

Paul Juda could two-per-country Brody Malone or Fred Richard out of the all-around depending on how the final few rotations go. Of course, the two high bar stars still have that event to go, but what a statement that would be.

Sat. July 27 @ 12:12 p.m.

Ahmad Abu Al Soud (JOR) PH: The first gymnast from Jordan to compete at the Olympic Games! Swing beautifully, but his hand slips partway through and he’s off. Devastating! World medalist at the past two championships. And he comes off again… The crowd is kind to him though, giving him encouragement. 12.466.

Joe Fraser (GBR) HB = 14.200

Sat. July 27 @ 11:57 a.m.

Asher Hong (USA) VT 1: Ri Se Gwang… this was messier than usual in podium training, so let’s see… JUICES it, one foot over the line, but firmly on his feet. What a guy. 14.700. VT 2: Kas double, tidy, great distance, still a step over the line, but great showing for him. 14.433. Average = 14.566.

Sat. July 27 @ 11:54 a.m.

Frederick Richard (USA) VT: Kas 1.5, great distance, bit of a stutter on the landing and steps over the line. 13.933

Sat. July 27 @ 11:52 a.m.

Sat. July 27 @ 11:51 a.m.

Meanwhile, Asher Hong (USA) had a great start to his Games on rings. Laid-out double-double dismount with a small hop. 14.633.

Sat. July 27 @ 11:36 a.m.

Brody Malone (USA) SR: Fell on pommel horse, so we’ll see how this goes… needs a redeeming routine to get himself back on track. A couple minor things, but tucked double-double is excellent, just a hop back. 14.233.

Frederick Richard (USA) SR = 13.500

Sat. July 27 @ 11:30 a.m.

Paul Juda (USA) SR: Excellent set capped off with a stuck cold full-twisting double layout, and he pumps his fists! Paul is having an excellent day so far! If Brody and Fred aren’t careful, he could two-per-country one of them out of the all-around. 13.400.

Team GB had a solid go over on vault. 14.300 from Joe Fraser followed by a 14.500 from Luke Whitehouse. They’re in good position to qualify two athletes to the vault final, with Harry Hepworth averaging a 14.766 and Jake Jarman a 14.699.

Sat. July 27 @ 11:17 a.m.

Stephen Nedoroscik (USA) PH: This is one of a potential three routines Stephen will do here. He was strategic about making this team, but there have been questions about him being able to consistently hit his high-difficulty routine. Let’s see what he has for us today… Good scissors. Nice Sohn. Beautiful pommel work. Working the Russians. Great elevation. Hits the dismount, and the crowd goes wild! He pumps his fists in the air and a huge smile. His day is done, and he’s done his job! 15.200 with a 6.4 D-score (8.8 E-score)!

Sat. July 27 @ 11:12 a.m.

Brody Malone (USA) PH: Brody off on horse early. Some form breaks on his Russians. Good on the dismount. 12.100.

U.S. was off to a good start on pommel horse with two hits from Paul Juda and Frederick Richard, but an uncharacteristic fall from Brody Malone puts the pressure on Stephen Nedoroscik to deliver.

Sat. July 27 @ 11:09 a.m.

Paul Juda (USA) PH: Takes a visible deep breath and he’s on the horse – Paul Judy, official Olympian! Swinging smooth through his flairs. Mount was solid as well. Outstanding dismount and the guys are HYPED. Beautiful set from Paul – one of the best he’s done this year, if not in his career. Rising to the occasion! 13.600.

Sat. July 27 @ 11:00 a.m.

The gymnasts have arrived and the Rotation 1 touch is happening now. The U.S. starts on pommel horse. Great Britain on vault, Canada on high bar, Germany on floor, and individuals on rings and parallel bars.

Sat. July 27 @ 10:40 a.m.

Here’s how qualifying will work: There are three subdivisions with qualifying happening for all finals (team, all-around, events). Here’s how many will advance: top 8 teams, top 24 all-arounders, top 8 individuals on each event. Reminder that there is a two-per-country rule, which means a max of two athletes per country can advance to individual finals (all-around and events).

Sat. July 27 @ 10:19 a.m.
