Stanford turned in its best performance of the year on Friday, earning a team score of 426.325 – a massive number that will be nearly impossible to beat if the Cardinal can replicate it on Saturday.
Parallel bars specialist Curran Phillips earned the top scores of Session 1 on his specialty event (15.200) and high bar (career-best 14.033). Freshman standout Khoi Young also posted a career-best on pommel horse with a 15.266.
Michigan and Nebraska could be outside contenders for Saturday’s national title if they bring their absolute A-game.
College Gymnastics Association MVP Paul Juda was the Wolverine’s top performer on night one, turning in the best scores of Session 2 on parallel bars (14.600) and high bar (14.200) while senior Cameron Bock made his return to competition on three events, highlighted by a 14.400 on parallel bars.
Nebraska collected two career-highs and three season-highs during its competition, with Sam Phillips notably anchoring the floor rotation with a 14.066 and a mic-dropping exit after his dismount.
Oklahoma finished third in the second qualifying session but will undoubtedly have the crowd on its side on Saturday night, so don’t count out the 12-time champion Sooners.
